Reader's Choice 6th Edition is an ESL/EFL textbook for the teaching of academic skills. Its focus is on the reader's ability to select the proper skills or strategies to solve complex reading challenges. The exercises and readings help students to become independent, efficient readers. Each reading is accompanied by a wide variety of exercises. Skills-focused units alternate with units centering on full reading passages.

The context

Newgen was commissioned to develop new material and update every unit of the 5th edition. We managed all production stages, working closely with the University of Michigan Press editor and author team on both the print and interactive e-pub versions of the book. Our responsibilities included editorial project management, copy editing, typesetting, design, proofreading, interactive e-pub mapping and interactive e-pub creation.

The challenges faced

Reader’s Choice 6th Edition is a complex book combining academic study skills and English Language Learning. A standard ELL workflow was not suitable for this project so we devised a new way of working to deliver the 405 print pages in 7 months, and the e-pub a month later.

Our approach

Newgen’s hybrid approach was key to meeting the delivery challenge. Resourcing editorial project management and all editorial services onshore and typesetting and e-pub creation offshore enabled us to deliver on time and within budget. Newgen’s Editorial Project Manager kept this potentially unwieldy project on track.

Outcome

At Newgen, we’re proud to have collaborated with UMPress in the 6th edition of this much-loved and successful ESL/EFL textbook.
